24 June 2009
On Friday 19 June 2009 we were pleased to welcome, amongst other distinguished guests, David Young, President, and Gordon Ash from the West of Scotland Wooden Spoon Society for the formal Opening of the new all-weather sports pitch at Columba 1400, Staffin.
Following the speeches and a ceremonial ribbon cutting by David Young and Professor Bill Barr, Trustee of Columba 1400, a 6-a-side match was played by members of the local community and returning Columba 1400 Graduates from Cumnock Academy, one of our very first Scottish schools to take part in the Columba 1400 Ambassadors’ programme.
The local community shares Columba 1400’s excitement at this fantastic all weather facility which is already being much used, by locals and visitors alike! Yet this would not have been possible without the substantial completion funding of the West of Scotland Wooden Spoon Society. We remain grateful to them as indeed all the other major donors who made this project possible.
HRH The Princess Royal, Patron Columba 1400 sent her best wishes for the Wooden Spoon Pitch Opening in a letter from her Private Secretary which was read to the assembled gathering by our Founder and Chairman, Norman Drummond:
"...Her Royal Highness was very pleased to read of progress and congratulates you particularly on the leadership academies being started in South Africa. The Princess was pleased to read that your new five a side sports pitch will be opened on Friday 19th June and she hopes this is a most successful occasion. ...The Princess sends you and all at Columba 1400 her best wishes for your continued success."
